Thousands of students in Huntsville and Madison County were educated at Campus No. 805 from 1951 to 2009, leaving an academic and athletic legacy that will be passed down for years.
In 1949, the Stone Center building on Campus No. 805 was built to house classes for a new extension of the University of Alabama, which would ultimately become UAH. It reopened in 1951 as S.R. Butler High School, a county education named for Samuel Riley Butler, and transferred to the city school system in 1956. Butler High School moved to neighboring Holmes Avenue in 1967, and the new Roy L. Stone Middle School was built on the Clinton Avenue/Triana Boulevard site.
Stone Middle School was closed by the Huntsville City School District in 2009, and the property was placed up for sale. Finding a buyer took five years. Randy Schrimsher bought the property in 2014 with the intention of creating a one-of-a-kind development that will honor the school's history while also providing a vibrant entertainment venue for the community.
The first tenants to sign on for the new project were Straight to Ale Brewery and Yellowhammer Brewery. Matheny-Goldmon Architects and Interior Designers were entrusted with modernizing the school building as well as designing new brewery, restaurant, entertainment, and retail areas that would complement the campus's aesthetic.
Campus No. 805 was the name given to the project. By appropriating the final three digits of their zip code – 35805 – the name pays honor to the memories cherished by thousands of students, instructors, parents, and administrators who were a part of this school, as well as the West Huntsville area.
The city of Huntsville developed an urban park with a recreational lawn that connects the new and old structures to recapture and maintain the athletic grounds. S.R. Butler Green is the name of the public park. The 13-acre project was honored by Huntsville's Historic Preservation Consultant in 2016 for its preservation and adaptive reuse of a significant community space.
