To relieve suffering and to better the lives of animals, the Humane Society Pet Rescue and Adoption Center was formed on April 30, 1973. Alabamians State Senator Richard Malone, local veterinarian Dr. James Isbell, and board members Cindy Forsman, Pat Martin, Donna Parker, Mary Camp, Carroll Crane, Debbie Johnston, Matthew Gilbert, Elaine Gilbert, and Earl Garrett founded the HSPRAC. Sen. Malone worked to improve animal sheltering facilities for all communities by advocating for statewide legislation that establishes equitable and adequate animal sheltering services for all cities. To help to provide an alternative to other operations in the area, the HSPRAC began operating in 2010.
The Humane Society Pet Rescue and Adoption Center is a place where animals are brought in to be adopted, but it also functions as a shelter for animals who need to be cared for since their owners cannot afford to care for them. Shelters that accept animals brought in by the public, strays, and surrendered animals are known as open-door shelters. Additionally, animal control officers from the contracted municipalities transport animals who are involved in cruelty cases, and these animals are also included in the definition of "animal control officer transports". The Society staff takes an active role in helping to resolve cases of animal cruelty in the Northeast section of the state. The HSPRAC has a full-time executive director and employees, and its leadership is entrusted to volunteer board members. HSPRAC has a team of hundreds of volunteers who offer their support in a variety of ways, including program and fundraising assistance.

HSPRAC is always in need of suitable homes for their furry friends, whether adoption or foster care. They welcome you to visit their shelter as often as you'd like until you find your forever pet.
The adoption process includes a submission of an application for approval. To safeguard the well-being of the animal and to ensure your home is a good fit for it, this method has been put in place.
