How to Remove Pet Stains and Odors

Items That Can Be Machine-Washed

Wash as usual with a one-pound box of baking soda added to your regular detergent, air drying if possible. If you can still see or smell the soiling, use an enzymatic cleanser to break down the scents left by pet excrement.

Upholstery and Carpeted Areas of Your House

For "fresh" stains (those that are still moist), follow these steps:

• As much urine as possible should be soaked up. Cover the damp region with a thick layer of paper towels and then a thick layer of newspaper. If at all feasible, place newspaper under the contaminated area. Repeat for about a minute on this padding until the area is barely damp.
• Using clean, cool water, thoroughly rinse the "accident zone" and blot dry.
• Consider renting a carpet cleaner from your local hardware or grocery store for stains that have already set.
• Once the area is clean, apply a high-quality pet odor neutralizer.
• If the area is still discolored after it has dried fully, use carpet stain remover.
• When cleaning urine odors from carpet or upholstery, avoid utilizing steam cleaners. By attaching the protein into any man-made fibers, heat will permanently fix the stain and odor.
• If urine has soaked into the padding beneath your carpet, your work will be more difficult. Parts of the carpet and padding may need to be replaced in some circumstances.

Paint and Wood Damage and Deterioration from Urine

If the wood or paint on your furniture, walls, baseboard, or floor has reacted to the acid in your dog’s pee, it will appear to be discolored. It's possible that the wood or paint layer will need to be removed and replaced. (If you do this, make certain the new product is pet-safe.) Enzymatic cleaners may be helpful when it comes to enamel paints, and some washable wallpapers.

Look for Older Pet Stains & Messes

Old messes may have dried up and become difficult to locate. To locate them:

• Smell for urine-soaked spots
• Examine the region thoroughly for any difficult-to-find soiling or spots.
• Use a black light to locate filthy spots and lightly outline them with chalk if you have one.
• Once the area is clean, make it unattractive and/or unavailable to your pet and make the appropriate bathroom area attractive. As long as your pet can smell their personal scent, they will continue to return to the "accident zone."

What Else Can You Do?

Have your pet checked by a veterinarian to rule out medical causes for the accident(s). When you are certain your pet is healthy, enroll in a dog training program to help train your dog and eliminate pet accidents completely.

Finally, understanding your pet's motivations will make it easier to get them on the right track again. Was there a specific reason your dog relieved themself in that area? The re-training period may take a week or months. Remember, it takes time to build the bad habit and it will take time to replace that habit with a new, more acceptable behavior.
