Each year, the Athens Limestone Animal Shelter accepts about 3,000 dogs and cats from Athens and Limestone County animal control officers, as well as residents who find strays or can no longer care for their pets. Every attempt is made to reunite lost animals with their families and to place adoptable dogs and cats in loving, forever homes.

The adoption procedure consists of the following steps:
• complete an application
• a veterinary reference
• paying an adoption fee
• filling out a contract
The contract states that if the adoption does not work for any reason, you will return the animal back to the shelter. If you rent, please first check with your landlords pet policy, before you fill in an application. The shelter may also contact your apartment complex.
You must be at least 18 years of age to submit an application for adoption.
