Athens Limestone Animal Shelter

Contact Us

Each year, the Athens Limestone Animal Shelter accepts about 3,000 dogs and cats from Athens and Limestone County animal control officers, as well as residents who find strays or can no longer care for their pets. Every attempt is made to reunite lost animals with their families and to place adoptable dogs and cats in loving, forever homes.

How Can You Help Athens Limestone Animal Shelter?

  • Your pets should be spayed or neutered. There are more animals in need of homes than there are homes available to take them. Please do not introduce unwanted puppies or kittens into the world.
  • Instead of buying a dog or cat from a breeder or pet store, consider adopting from a shelter or rescue group. There are purebred animals in shelters looking for homes, and what's the harm in having a mixed breed animal? It gives them personality!
  • Foster. Often, rescue organizations demand a dog to be out of the shelter for two weeks before accepting him. Or maybe a mother cat needs a quiet spot to nurse her kittens in their first few weeks of life. Can you provide a temporary home that allows an animal to find a forever family?
  • Volunteer. You can be a valuable volunteer if you can walk a dog or pet a cat. Shelter animals require socializing that only humans can provide.
  • Donate. Pet food, cat litter, litter boxes, treats, towels, and toys are all available.
  • Sponsor. They work with rescue groups around the country to find homes for their animals, and if they can help fund the cost of shipping these animals to other groups, they are more likely to take them. The average cost of sponsorship is $90.
  • Support. Every year, your financial support feeds and cares for hundreds of cats, dogs, kittens, and puppies. You can mail a check or donate online using a credit card or PayPal.
