Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge

Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, one of Alabama's many birding destinations, is like a vacation spot for winter and migrating birds. There are almost 300 identified species at the reserve, including Bald Eagles and Whooping Cranes, so ornithologists will have much to see.

If you bring your binoculars, you might see Northern Cardinals and Red-bellied Woodpeckers on your tour. The wildlife reserve is only 23 miles south of Athens, making it an ideal day trip destination.

So bring a picnic, your walking shoes, and your camera, and spend the day in the lovely Alabama woods with a plethora of feathery companions!

Big Spring Park

Big Spring Park is the spot to go if you don't want to travel too far and want to have a family picnic or take a leisurely walk. There's a pond with ducks and two enormous fountains in the center, as well as plenty of grassy and sheltered spaces.

You may play tennis with friends or neighbors, or have a picnic in the pavilion with fresh produce from the Athens Saturday Market. Big Spring Park also caters to younger guests, with a wonderful playground where kids can let loose and run about for hours.

Southern Gayles Golf Course

On the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, golfers visiting Alabama have their pick of beautiful championship courses; but, if you're staying in Athens and don't want to travel far, you could play Southern Gayles golf course.

This enjoyable par-72 course features a driving range, putting green, and snack bar, as well as nearly 6700 yards of golf from the longest tees. Because it is open to the entire public, you can come and go as you like.

Point Mallard Water Park

If you're visiting the Athens region with children during the summer, Point Mallard Water Park is a great place to visit. This fantastic park, located 19 miles south of Athens, is ideal for a family day.

You may splash around and soak up the sun from dawn to sunset at America's First Wave Pool, which features seven flume slides and a picturesque lagoon. You also have options if you don't want to perform anything too strenuous.

Simply float down the Lazy River, relax on the man-made beach, or dine and drink at one of the picnic pavilions.

Antebellum Trail

The Limestone County Antebellum Trail takes guests on a walking or driving tour of the cities of Athens, Mooresville, and Belle Mina, highlighting charming post-Civil War homes and architecture.

During open hours, visitors can go inside some of the buildings, including the Mooresville Post Office and Athens State University.

Although this is a self-guided tour, you can purchase an audio CD from the Athens-Limestone Visitors Centre if you want to learn more about the Antebellum residences and their clientele while you're out and about.
