Decatur is known as "The River City" and is located in northern Alabama along Wheeler Lake.  Surprisingly, it has quite a bit of outdoorsy things to do for a city of only 55k people. Decatur was officially formed in 1821 and has a lot great thing to offer.

The Pickwick Belle

The Pickwick Belle, an antique paddle wheel riverboat, is located on Wheeler Lake on the Tennessee River. The boat has been in operation since 2012 and is a beautiful sight to witness with its dual decks. The boat's bottom deck has an enclosed 1,000 square foot dining area, galley, and bar, as well as a dance floor. For those who wish to sit outside, the top desk is entirely covered but set up for those who want a better perspective of the world around them. The boats go up and down the river on a regular basis and can hold 112 persons.

Wheeler Wildlife Refuge

The Wheeler Wildlife Refuge is a 34,000-acre wooded area that has been preserved naturally. It is a truly one-of-a-kind location that allows tourists to see animals in its native setting. The refuge was established in 1938 to provide a safe haven for the local waterfowl. On site, there is also an educational center with a glass observatory that allows you to obtain the best view of your surroundings. Many booklets describing the finest tours of the refuge can be found in the observatory.

Delano Park

Delano Park is Decatur's oldest park, with plenty of things to see and do. The WPA Rose Garden, for example, was recently renovated to ensure that it looked as it did when the park was first intended. The park was established in 1887 and spans 28 acres. Due to its history, the park is listed on the National Historic Register. There is a History Route that extends from the east to the west end of the park; there are also plaques along the trail that chronicle the story of the park and the city. A picnic shelter, playground, and tennis courts are among the park's other attractions.
